Panasonic launches compact 20mm LUMIX S prime lens

Panasonic has launched the LUMIX S 20mm F2.5 lens for its full-frame L-Mount camera system, expanding its line-up of compact full-frame lenses.
The interchangeable lens is aimed at users of Panasonic's full-frame LUMIX cameras, with the LUMIX S9 highlighted as a particular fit. It will be sold in black and light silver through photo specialists and consumer electronics retailers for a recommended retail price of AUD $849.
The lens has a 20mm focal length and an F2.5 aperture. Panasonic lists the body at about 142g and about 40.9mm in length. It is built on the L-Mount system standard, which is used across several mirrorless camera brands.
It includes three aspherical elements and is designed to maintain sharpness from the centre to the edge of the frame while reducing optical aberrations. The lens also supports a closest focusing distance of 0.18 metres for close-up images.
For video work, the lens is designed to suppress focus breathing during focus transitions. Panasonic has also added a customisable Lens Fn button and a control ring, although some functions depend on support from the paired camera body.
Firmware updates
Alongside the lens launch, Panasonic is releasing firmware and software updates across parts of the LUMIX range. The updates cover the LUMIX S9 camera, the S1RII, S1II and S1IIE models, and the LUMIX Lab and LUMIX Flow apps.
On the LUMIX S9, firmware version 2.1 adds support for LUMIX Flow version 1.7.0 and expands recording options in MP4 (Lite). The update adds 4K 60p and 50p settings, along with full HD 120p, 100p, 60p and 50p options.
It also expands the list of functions that can be assigned to the Lens Fn button, including aspect ratio, video stabilisation settings, image area of video, focus ring control, focus limiter, hybrid zoom, crop zoom, focus peaking and video record.
For the LUMIX S1RII, S1II and S1IIE, firmware changes improve shutter release responsiveness and burst shooting performance when external flash units are used. The updates also improve overall operational stability.
App changes
The LUMIX Lab app is being updated to version 3.1.1. It will support the new MP4 (Lite) recording formats on the LUMIX S9, add new filtering for LUT categories, group downloadable LUT packs by creative theme, and introduce user interface changes.
LUMIX Flow version 1.7.0 will also expand compatibility to the LUMIX S9 and introduce usability changes intended to support more efficient production workflows.
The launch adds another compact prime lens to Panasonic's recent full-frame range expansion. The 20mm model joins the LUMIX S 40mm F2 lens released earlier this year.
The lens has a dust- and splash-resistant design when attached to a compatible camera body. Its front element also has a fluorine coating intended to make dirt, water droplets and fingerprints easier to remove.
The LUMIX S 20mm F2.5 will be available from selected retailers at AUD $849.
