The first Knack game was a PS4 launch title and it was underwhelming and repetitive. Thankfully Knack 2 is a big improvement over the first game.
If you played the first Knack video game, you will know that it was repetitive and boring to play. The combat got stale really fast and the level design was linear and uninspired. The only good thing about the first game was the impressive graphics showcasing the PS4's power.
Knack 2 on the other hand has many big improvements that makes it feel less repetitive and fun. This is thanks to better level design as well as more abilities for Knack to use. The sequel is more than just you spamming the square button over and over again.
Anyway, Knack 2 is a direct sequel featuring many of the characters from the first game. Without giving away too many spoilers, the Goblins are not the only threat that wants to take over the world. A new enemy emerges and Knack and his team have to prepare for the worst.
The story itself is not original, but there is a twist along the way. The only major thing that disappoints me about the game is that lack of memorable characters. Knack himself has a nice smooth voice, but I don't know much about him. As for the human characters, all of them are bland and forgettable for the most part.
That said, it's the gameplay that counts and there are many new features added here to make the game feel fresh and exciting. Even though the level design is still linear, there's more puzzle solving elements and different challenges along the way to break the monotony of the combat.
For example, there are many stealth sections included where Knack can turn small and hide from enemies. There are also several segments where Knack can pilot some really cool vehicles. The puzzle solving is also cool and hints are provided for younger players that aren't skilled and video games.
The combat is vastly improved, although only when you finish the game. I would say the first half of the game is quite boring because Knack doesn't have all of his abilities yet. When you do get new abilities, the combat feels less repetitive.
Some of the new things in Knack's arsenal includes a boomerang that can trap enemies. He also has several new elemental abilities such as freeze breath when he fuses with ice and tag-team moves when you are playing the co-op mode.
Speaking of co-op, playing with a friend is arguably the best way to play Knack 2. It adds some new moves for you to do and working together can make the combat much easier. You don't have to worry about camera issues either since the camera is fixed throughout the entire game.
The game itself took me around 10 hours to complete, although this could be longer depending on the difficulty you choose. This is around the same length as the first game, although this sequel feels much better.
Aside from a cliche story and bland characters, Knack 2 is a fun platforming game that can be enjoyed by gamers of all ages. This is thanks to several new features to make the gameplay experience feel fresh. The first half of the game still feels boring, but things improve as you progress.
