Audible unveils cheaper Standard tier in six markets

Thu, 5th Mar 2026

Audible has launched a lower-priced Standard membership tier across Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and France, adding a cheaper option as consumers scrutinise monthly spending on digital entertainment.

In Australia, Standard costs AUD $8.99 a month. It includes one audiobook per month from Audible's catalogue, plus unlimited listening from a curated library of Audible Originals and nearly 200 popular titles previously available on Wondery+.

The launch comes amid rising subscription fatigue in Australia, where households manage an average of 3.7 digital entertainment subscriptions. Monthly spend has increased from AUD $63 to AUD $78, according to figures cited by Audible, pushing some consumers toward lower-commitment options with clearer value.

What's included

Standard members can choose one audiobook each month from Audible's full catalogue and keep access to that title for as long as their membership remains active.

The plan also includes unlimited, ad-free listening from a smaller library, including Originals such as The Winning Formula and Corked, as well as titles such as The Big Lie and Mistletoe Murders.

A key feature is the addition of nearly 200 hit titles previously available on Wondery+, now classified as Audible Originals. These include series such as Dr. Death, American Scandal, and Business Wars.

Some of these programmes will remain available on other platforms, but certain features previously associated with Wondery+ will move behind Audible's paywall. Early access and ad-free listening for these former Wondery+ titles will be available only to Audible members. Audible also says select titles, including Dying for Sex, The Shrink Next Door, and Ghost Story, will be exclusive to members.

Pricing strategy

Standard sits below Audible's Premium Plus subscription, priced from AUD $16.45 a month in Australia. Premium Plus includes one credit a month that can be used to buy any audiobook, plus unlimited listening to thousands of audiobooks and originals from the Plus Catalogue.

Audible also sells audiobooks individually, giving it multiple ways to monetise listening-from lower-cost subscriptions to higher-priced tiers and one-off purchases.

Audible positions Standard as an entry-level option for listeners who want one book a month and access to a limited library. It also gives publishers and creators another route to reach listeners who may not commit to a higher monthly fee.

"The launch of our Standard tier reflects Audible's ongoing commitment to serving the diverse preferences and listening habits of story-lovers everywhere," said Cynthia Chu, Chief Financial & Growth Officer at Audible.

"By expanding our membership options, we're maximizing access for lighter listeners while enabling publishers and creators to reach new audiences - a win-win that grows the entire audiobook category," Chu said.

Early signals

Early testing in select markets showed strong acquisition and retention, Audible says. Tests in Australia and the UK delivered a double-digit percentage increase in new member sign-ups compared with previous offerings.

Audible expects the rollout across the six launch markets to expand its customer base, projecting the Standard tier will attract millions of new consumers over the next year.

Standard is available immediately in Australia, the US, the UK, Canada, Germany, and France, with testing underway in additional marketplaces.
