Charles Darwin University unveils high-tech education and community hub

Tue, 12th Aug 2025

Charles Darwin University (CDU) has opened its new Education and Community Precinct on Cavenagh Street, Darwin, delivering a high-tech learning environment designed to encourage collaboration and community engagement.

The multi-storey campus integrates cutting-edge technology across lecture rooms, meeting areas, and communal spaces. The build required an advanced unified communications (UC) and audiovisual (AV) system capable of supporting seamless communication, high-quality conferencing, and inclusive learning experiences.

Audiovisual Projects (NT) secured the contract to deliver the technology fit-out, partnering with Amber Technology to supply equipment from multiple brands. The solution aimed to balance functionality and cost efficiency while meeting the university's high standards.

A central feature of the installation is the deployment of Yamaha ADECIA RM-CG ceiling microphones across about 90 lecture and student spaces. These devices provide "crystal-clear audio and unmatched coverage for video conferencing," and their competitive price made them a standout choice for the university. Aver CAM520PROADV PTZ cameras were installed in more than 60 rooms, offering high-quality video for conferencing, while Aver VB 342+ video conferencing bars were fitted in 30 huddle spaces to cater to smaller zones.

Document presentation has been enhanced with Aver F17-8M document cameras in 36 lecture and teaching spaces, delivering 8MP resolution for detailed content capture. Accessibility was addressed with Williams AV WFT8D Wavecast transmitters, providing 40 audio channels for assisted learning through the university's Wi-Fi network.

The public address system includes a six-zone configuration on Levels 1 and 2, powered by Australian Monitor IS4250P 4-channel power amplifiers with Dante expansion. These feed Australian Monitor QFC6CS coaxial speakers for clear sound across public areas, while larger spaces such as studios, galleries, and seminar rooms use Australian Monitor QF60CS and QF80CS ceiling speakers for comprehensive audio coverage.

The completed works have given CDU a versatile and scalable AV and UC infrastructure. Max Di Toro of Audiovisual Projects said the installation overcame several technical challenges to deliver an integrated, high-performance system.

"Our design and installation team did a great job, and despite some tricky challenges along the way, the audio-visual equipment proposed and installed, together with the brands supplied by Amber Technology meant that CDU was pleased with the outcomes," Mr Di Toro said. "Without a doubt, the Charles Darwin University Education and Community Precinct is equipped with smart, cutting-edge technology, facilitating interaction and collaboration between students, teachers, and the community".

The new facility forms part of CDU's broader strategy to expand its presence in Darwin's city centre, offering students modern spaces and tools for learning and connection. By combining advanced communication technologies with adaptable teaching environments, the precinct is expected to enhance both academic delivery and community engagement for years to come.
