OCAM 4X4 Accessories has launched a full accessory range for the BYD Shark 6 and GWM Cannon in Australia, as new search data points to rising consumer interest in Chinese-made utes.

Figures released by the retailer show the BYD Shark 6 recorded 1,785,680 searches over the past 12 months, ahead of the Toyota HiLux at 1,667,090 and the Kia Tasman at 1,607,970. The Ford Ranger and Mazda BT-50 followed with 1,130,700 and 1,032,240 searches respectively.

The range includes electric and manual tonneau roller covers, aluminium canopies, roof racks, drawer systems, weathershields and floor mats for both models. GWM Cannon-specific items include a steel bull bar and heavy-duty side steps.

Products are available nationwide through OCAM's online store and outlets in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia.

Search shift

The search data adds to signs that Chinese ute brands are attracting more attention from Australian buyers in a market long dominated by Japanese and US nameplates. The BYD Shark 6 topping the list puts it ahead of established models that have traditionally led demand in the segment.

That shift has exposed a gap in the local aftermarket, where owners of newer imported models can struggle to find parts and accessories tailored to fit. OCAM is positioning its latest release around that gap with model-specific products for the Shark 6 and Cannon.

Product range

Higher-priced items include electric roller covers for the BYD Shark 6 and GWM Cannon at AUD $2,199, aluminium canopies for both vehicles at AUD $2,195, and rear drawer systems at AUD $2,599. Manual roller covers are listed at AUD $1,399, while roof racks for the Shark 6 range from AUD $799 to AUD $1,254.

Lower-priced accessories include weathershields for both vehicles at AUD $89 and 3D and 5D car mats at AUD $147. For the GWM Cannon, the range also includes a deluxe steel bull bar at AUD $1,549 and heavy-duty steel side steps at AUD $699.

The line-up reflects how ute owners use these vehicles for both work and leisure, from tray storage and weather protection to roof transport and cabin fit-out. It also highlights how retailers are adapting more quickly to vehicle brands that have only recently arrived in Australia.

Market context

Australia's ute market remains one of the most competitive parts of the automotive sector, with buyer interest shaped by price, fuel type, towing capacity and accessory support. For newer entrants, aftermarket availability can influence ownership costs and practicality as much as the initial purchase.

Retailers that can supply vehicle-specific accessories early may gain an advantage as newer models build a customer base. That is particularly relevant for the BYD Shark 6, which has moved quickly into public view, if online search activity is any guide.

OCAM's release of products for both the Shark 6 and Cannon suggests retailers see enough scale in Chinese ute demand to justify dedicated inventory. With the HiLux, Ranger and BT-50 still among the country's best-known utes, the latest search rankings indicate attention is no longer confined to the traditional leaders.

The top five models by 12-month search volume were the BYD Shark 6, Toyota HiLux, Kia Tasman, Ford Ranger and Mazda BT-50, with the Shark 6 recording the highest total at 1,785,680.
