Cricket Australia updates app with AI insights, analysis & history

Fri, 19th Dec 2025

Cricket Australia has overhauled its Cricket Australia Live App with real-time artificial intelligence insights and access to official scorecards dating back to 1886, in a move that deepens its use of data and automation in fan coverage.

The governing body worked with Insight Enterprises, Microsoft, HCL Tech and Skewer on the latest release. The update adds automated match analysis during live games and new interactive features that allow users to ask follow-up questions inside the app.

Cricket Australia said more than one million Australians already use the app each summer. The organisation sees the new functionality as a way to expand digital engagement around domestic and international fixtures.

"The latest evolution of the Cricket Australia Live App reflects our commitment to delivering world-class experiences for our fans. By combining real-time AI insights with new interactivity for follow-up questions and access to official scorecards dating back to 1886, we are offering a unique level of engagement and personalisation in sports technology. This combination of history and technology sets a new benchmark for how fans connect with the game," said Kieran McMillan, Head of Customer Experience, Cricket Australia.

Real-time insights

The updated app generates short-form analysis on player and team milestones as matches progress. It uses what Cricket Australia describes as agentic AI. The system surfaces facts and records in near real time, then presents them to fans in an editorial-style feed alongside live coverage.

The AI engine draws on a match archive that stretches back nearly 140 years. The archive contains official scorecards from 1886 onwards. The system can link current performances with historical events and records from the archive.

Developers have also added an interactive layer. Fans can pose follow-up questions to the AI, which generates responses inside the app. The organisation said future updates will introduce different AI "personas" tailored for varying levels of cricket knowledge, from newcomers to long-time followers.

The AI component runs on OpenAI's GPT-5 model, which is hosted in Microsoft's Azure AI Foundry. This infrastructure underpins the live query and conversation features inside the app.

Technology partners

Insight Enterprises led the AI build for the new features as solutions integrator. The company worked alongside Microsoft and technology partners HCL Tech and Skewer on the project.

"Technology is fundamentally changing the way we engage with the world around us, and sport is no exception. As an AI-first leading Solutions Integrator, Insight is proud to power the AI Insights feature within the Cricket Australia Live App, ushering in a new era of fan engagement. By uniting advanced artificial intelligence, cloud innovation, and a passion for sport, we are helping Cricket Australia deliver a richer, more personalised, and truly interactive experience for every fan," shared Mike Morgan, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Insight, APAC.

Microsoft supplies the cloud and AI platform that underpins the new service. HCL Tech and Skewer worked on development and integration of the AI features into the existing app framework.

Sarah Carney, Technology Officer at Microsoft Australia and New Zealand, said the project shows how a major sporting body can embed AI into its core fan products.

"Cricket Australia continues to show what's possible when a sporting code leans all the way into AI. This next evolution of AI Insights doesn't just enhance the fan experience, it reimagines it. By combining real-time, analyst‐grade insights with more than a century of rich cricket history, they're setting a new global benchmark for how technology can deepen our connection to the game, enhancing the experience for existing fans and creating a new generation of fans," said Carney.

Community focus

Cricket Australia positions the new AI Insights feature as a companion to live viewing. The feature sits alongside scores, ball-by-ball commentary and video. It generates prompts and talking points that users can then share on social channels or in direct conversations.

The organisation said it wants the app to act as a hub for debate around player milestones, records and turning points in matches. Fans can review historical parallels from the archive and compare current events with classic games and eras.

The partners involved in the project said the collaboration combines technology expertise with cricket-specific data and editorial oversight. The integration of long-term historical data with live analytics reflects a wider trend in sports media, where rights holders seek deeper engagement through statistics and narrative.

Cricket Australia said additional AI-driven personalisation features, including selectable fan personas, will roll out in upcoming versions of the app on iOS and Android.
