Firex revolutionises fire safety with 24/7 self service warehouses

An Australian company is reshaping the way fire protection equipment is distributed and managed nationwide.

The need for timely and efficient fire safety solutions is becoming increasingly urgent. In New South Wales alone, Fire and Rescue NSW attends more than 130,000 incidents annually, with nearly 20,000 of those involving fires or explosions. The residential sector is particularly vulnerable: approximately 4,500 house fires are reported each year, almost half of which start in kitchens and 40% are related to electrical faults.

The repercussions of household fires can be severe. Each year, more than 50 Australians lose their lives to residential fires, many of which could be avoided with functioning smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, and other essential equipment. Alarming figures from winter 2023 show that almost half of NSW homes affected by fire had no working smoke alarm, emphasising the importance of accessible and compliant safety gear.

The landscape of fire safety is also changing as new hazards emerge. Lithium ion battery fires have risen as a significant concern, with 456 incidents reported in NSW in the 2022–23 period, leading to the evacuation of more than 2,000 people. This evolving risk profile underscores the necessity for swift access to appropriate fire protection tools.

Distribution redefined

In response to these challenges, FIREX has introduced a new approach to equipment distribution. Since 2018, the company has operated 24/7 self service warehouses, offering technicians immediate access to a comprehensive range of fire protection products. FIREX currently maintains 20 warehouses across Australia, 16 of which operate around the clock, creating a logistics system designed for resilience and adaptability.

FIREX Owner Ali McGovern highlighted the company's foundation in innovative practices.

"From the beginning, we set out to reinvent distribution in our industry. We knew that if technicians and customers could access critical fire safety equipment faster, with less downtime and less travel, they could serve more customers and be better prepared for challenges that arise," said Ali.

The company employs a streamlined process where technicians receive a one time entry code, activating roller doors, lighting, and cameras, allowing for contactless collection of equipment. By cutting down on travel and wait times, technicians are able to focus more of their day on community service and fire prevention activities.

Sustainability integrated

The FIREX distribution model has further implications for sustainability and operational efficiency. Businesses using FIREX no longer need to store large volumes of equipment themselves, enabling improved cash flow and reduced overheads. The company's warehouses are also equipped with Swap and Go recycling cages - initiatives that have resulted in up to 90% of materials being reused. This operational structure aims to embed circular economy practices into daily business while minimising industry waste.

Ali McGovern explained the broader philosophy underpinning this approach:

"Sustainability goes beyond reducing waste. It is about creating intelligent systems that save time, streamline operations, cut waste and reinforce long term resilience in the sector," Ali said.

The increasing risk of rapid-fire escalation in modern homes, where rooms can reach dangerous temperatures in just three to four minutes compared to 30 minutes in older structures, adds urgency to this model. Immediate access to fire-fighting tools, such as extinguishers and blankets, supports front-line efforts to contain incidents before they become catastrophic.

Australian-developed approach

FIREX'S journey, from its origins in Sydney's Northwest to managing what is now the largest fire industry distribution network in Australia, demonstrates a local solution to a pressing national challenge.

Ali McGovern described the company's guiding vision:

"By integrating technology, efficiency and sustainability with a commitment to outstanding customer service, we show how industries can reimagine long standing models to meet the demands of tomorrow," Ali said.

Beyond advancements in business operations, FIREX's model asserts a new standard for the fire protection industry. By providing timely access to safety equipment and promoting preparedness and sustainability, the approach highlights the correlation between improved logistics and reduced loss of life and property damage.

As the frequency of fire incidents remains consistently high across Australia and new threats continue to arise, ensuring the timely delivery of essential safety equipment is increasingly vital. For FIREX, these efforts represent more than just operational convenience - they are about the ongoing protection of homes, workplaces, and communities around the country.
