Nikon's lighter, faster Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II

Thu, 26th Feb 2026

Nikon Australia has released the Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II, a fast telephoto zoom for full-frame FX-format Nikon Z mirrorless cameras. It features a redesigned build that reduces weight and updates autofocus.

The lens covers 70mm to 200mm with a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture. Nikon lists the weight at 998g, excluding the tripod collar ring and protective cover, and says it is the lightest in its class among 70-200mm f/2.8 interchangeable lenses for full-frame mirrorless cameras.

Most of the weight savings come from changes to moving optical components and internal mechanisms. Nikon estimates an approximately 26% reduction compared with the Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S introduced in 2020, positioning the lighter build as useful for long shooting days, hand-held work, and video on stabilised rigs.

Autofocus Update

The lens adds Nikon's Silky Swift VCM autofocus actuator, designed for smooth, quiet focus in both stills and video. Nikon also reports autofocus is approximately 3.5 times faster with a camera that uses the EXPEED 7 image-processing engine, based on its measurement methods.

Nikon also reports improved tracking while zooming, estimating AF tracking with zooming is roughly 40% better than the earlier Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S. It says this benefits subjects that change speed and direction, including sports.

Australian photographer Chris Grundy, who tested the lens, highlighted its handling and responsiveness.

"When I first pulled the lens out of the bag, it just felt right. Solid, balanced, purposeful. It had that quiet confidence straight away, like you knew it was built to work.

"But what stood out most wasn't just how it felt in hand; it was how quickly it disappeared once I started shooting. The more time I spent with it, the less I thought about it. And for me, that's everything. When I'm shooting real moments, I need to trust that the gear will keep up. I don't want to be second-guessing focus or weight or performance. I just want to respond to what's unfolding."

Optics and Coatings

Nikon says it reduced the number of lens elements by repositioning aspherical elements and adding Super ED and aspherical ED elements, which it says help correct chromatic aberration. Nikon says the changes support a lighter build while maintaining S-Line image rendering standards.

The optical design uses six types of elements: Super ED, aspherical ED, ED, aspherical, fluorite, and SR. Nikon also lists Meso Amorphous Coat and ARNEO Coat, which it says reduce ghosting and flare.

The lens supports a minimum focusing distance of 0.38m at the wide end and 0.8m at the telephoto end. Nikon lists a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.3x at 70mm and 0.25x at 200mm.

Handling Features

The Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II uses an internal zoom mechanism, keeping its length constant through the zoom range. Nikon says this supports stable operation and contributes to dust- and drip-resistant performance.

The lens is also the first Nikkor lens that Nikon says supports Arca-Swiss tripod heads using screw-type quick-release clamps. Nikon advises against lever-type clamps, saying they may not secure the lens firmly.

A removable tripod collar ring allows quick switching between portrait and landscape orientation, and a protective cover is included for hand-held use. Nikon says the lens retains strength, durability, and dust- and drip-resistant performance even without the collar ring and protective cover.

Nikon has also added a filter adjustment window, allowing circular polarising and variable ND filters to be adjusted without removing the lens hood.

Stabilisation and Extenders

Nikon lists 6.0-stop vibration reduction at the centre and edges of the frame when used with a camera that supports Synchro VR. The lens also supports Nikon's Z teleconverters; Nikon says the Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4× and Z TELECONVERTER TC-2.0× extend reach for more distant subjects.

Nikon describes the Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II as a general-purpose fast telephoto zoom for stills and video, with updates focused on lower weight and improved focus performance.

"Nikon will continue to push the boundaries of optical performance, empowering creators and expanding the future of imaging expression."
