Telstra introduces free security feature for mobile users

Today

Telstra has announced the launch of Device Security Essentials, a free security feature designed to protect mobile phones from online threats.

According to research conducted by Telstra in partnership with YouGov, 86% of Australians who own a mobile or smartphone are concerned about cybercriminals targeting their personal information. This concern has prompted behavioural changes, with 18% of Australians spending less time browsing the internet on their phones over the past 12 months. Almost a third have started to use their phones primarily for calls and texts.

Despite a heightened awareness of online scams, the study revealed that 44% of Australian mobile owners are likely to connect to public Wi-Fi networks. This behaviour poses a risk, especially when conducting sensitive activities like online banking or paying bills, potentially exposing personal data to cyber threats.

Telstra's Device Security Essentials is offered free of charge to its consumer and small business mobile customers. It provides several security features powered by McAfee, including Wi-Fi Scan, Safe Browsing, and Device Check. The Wi-Fi Scan feature aims to protect users by scanning public networks for threats, while Safe Browsing alerts users to potential risks before they access risky websites and links. Device Check offers a security scan to detect suspicious apps and malware, with tailored features dependent on whether the device is an Android or iPhone.

Telstra stated, "Device Security Essentials is the latest in our ongoing efforts to keep Australians safe online, adding an extra layer of protection alongside our Cleaner Pipes Program, which blocks millions of scam calls, texts, and emails each month before they reach you."

The rollout of this new security measure aligns with broader efforts to enhance digital safety. Telstra has previously implemented strategies such as the Cleaner Pipes Program, which effectively intercepts scam communications.

Telstra is also collaborating with social media figures to raise awareness about these security features. Nonna Fina, a popular Australian-Italian figure on TikTok, is showcasing how easily Telstra's security functions can be managed. These efforts target not only tech-savvy users but also those less familiar with digital security practices, emphasising how accessible these protective measures are.

To enable Device Security Essentials, Telstra customers are required to ensure they have the latest version of the My Telstra App. From there, the security features can be activated or deactivated according to customer preference.
