Amber Technology has begun distributing the James by Sonance Wedge X Series architectural loudspeakers in Australia, adding a new range to its residential and commercial installation portfolio.

The Wedge X Series includes two models, the WX48QT and WX58QT, built around a wedge-shaped enclosure designed for placement where walls meet ceilings. James by Sonance says the range is aimed at projects where speakers need to sit within architectural lines rather than stand apart from them.

Each speaker is built to order and can be specified by length, channel count and finish. The range is available in one-, two- and three-channel versions, with 16 standard colour options for different interior settings.

The launch gives Australian installers access to a line previously shown in the US and other international markets. The range is available through Amber Technology's authorised dealer and integration partner network.

Product details

James by Sonance has updated the series with revised Quadratech tweeters, new woofers and redesigned crossovers. These changes are intended to deliver neutral voicing, broader coverage and stronger low-frequency response across residential and commercial applications.

The design also includes an integrated boundary switch. This allows installers to adjust the speaker for free-space, wall, ceiling or corner placement, reducing the need for extensive equalisation changes once the speakers are installed.

The enclosure uses marine-grade aluminium to support use in different environments. James by Sonance has also added redesigned mounting brackets that can adapt to uneven surfaces during installation.

A secure grille clip system is another change in the Wedge X Series. It is designed to help prevent accidental grille removal, particularly in locations where speakers may face more demanding physical conditions.

Installer focus

The release reflects a broader trend in the custom installation market, where manufacturers are trying to balance discreet speaker placement with installation flexibility. Products in this segment often aim to minimise visual impact while giving integrators more options to match room shapes, finishes and audio coverage requirements.

In this case, the 90-degree form factor is central to the range. By fitting into the junction between wall and ceiling surfaces, the speakers are designed to use space that might otherwise remain empty while still delivering audio across the listening area.

Amber Technology highlighted the custom-build element as one of the range's main selling points for local integrators. It allows installers to specify dimensions and layouts for a single project, rather than choosing only from fixed product sizes.

Alberto Zamudio, General Manager, Residential Install, Amber Technology, commented: "The Wedge X Series builds on a distinctive James by Sonance design while introducing practical improvements for integrators. The combination of flexible configuration options, updated acoustic technologies and improved installation features makes the range well suited to projects where both performance and architectural integration are important. The ability to customise the speakers for different project requirements also gives our integration partners greater flexibility when designing audio solutions around a space, rather than having to design the space around the loudspeaker."

Market position

Sonance has a long history in architectural audio, building its reputation on speakers designed to integrate into walls and ceilings. The James by Sonance line sits within that wider market, serving projects where shape, finish and placement matter alongside sound reproduction.

For Amber Technology, the addition expands an offering that already spans broadcast, recording, live production, musical instruments, specialist hi-fi and installed audio. The Australian distributor also serves the home entertainment and commercial installation sectors, where demand for discreet built-in sound systems has remained steady in both new builds and refurbishments.

The Wedge X Series appears to target the overlap between residential design and professional installation practice. Features such as custom dimensions, multiple channel formats and supplied mounting hardware suggest a product intended for integrators rather than general retail buyers.

Installation templates and mounting hardware are included with each built-to-order speaker. That matters in the custom installation trade, where site conditions can vary widely and time spent adapting equipment can affect labour costs and project schedules.

The redesigned brackets offer more flexibility when mounting onto uneven surfaces. In practice, that could help on renovation projects or in architectural spaces where corners and junctions are not perfectly aligned.

By making the Wedge X Series available locally, Amber Technology is giving Australian integrators a new option in a niche but established product category. The speakers are now sold through the distributor's authorised dealer and integration partner network.
