Sony unveils wireless grip, remote for Alpha cameras

Yesterday

Sony has introduced two new accessories, the Wireless Shooting Grip (GP-VPT3) and Remote Commander (RMT-VP2), both designed for compatibility with its Alpha Series and Vlog Camera Series.

The GP-VPT3 offers a combination of three functionalities, serving as a grip, a tripod, and a detachable remote commander. Utilising Bluetooth wireless technology, the grip is designed to accommodate cameras weighing up to 1.5kg and is intended to provide more stable handheld shooting and flexible positioning for users capturing both still images and videos.

According to Sony, the GP-VPT3 can be configured quickly between handheld grip and tripod modes. A one-touch switch allows users to transition easily between self-portrait and outward-facing orientations, and the adjustable tilt mechanism enables a variety of compositional angles. The detachable remote commander is equipped with a MOVIE button, Zoom/Focus functionality, and a customisable C1 button, permitting one-handed operation.

The ergonomically designed grip allows handheld shooting while performing key camera operations, such as zoom and focus, with one hand, regardless of dominant hand, for both still images and videos. The head mechanism allows for one-touch switching between self-portrait and outward shooting, and the tilt mechanism enables free angle adjustment.

The detachable remote commander is equipped with a MOVIE button, Zoom/Focus button, and C1 (Custom) button, allowing one-handed operation. This allows shutter operation from a distance so the photographer can be included in group photos and reduces camera shake in low-light conditions. The remote commander connects to Sony cameras and Xperia smartphones with a wireless communication range of approximately 10m.

The grip and remote commander connect to the main unit without cables or receivers, which Sony states helps maintain dust and moisture proof performance during camera connection. It is designed to help reduce camera shake in low-light settings and allows photographers to appear in group shots.

The GP-VPT3 is available in both black and white, while the RMT-VP2 remote commander, which is sold separately, is offered in black only. The RMT-VP2 is compatible with select Sony cameras and Xperia smartphones and can be used as a standalone wireless controller.

"The Three-in-One Wireless Shooting Grip serves as a grip, a tripod, and a detachable remote commander, enhancing usability and convenience for greater freedom in capturing videos and still images," Sony stated in its announcement.

The two accessories will be available in Australia in mid-2025. The recommended retail price for the GP-VPT3 is AUD $279.00, and the RMT-VP2 remote commander will be sold at AUD $159.00.

Key features highlighted by Sony include the ability for seamless transitions between modes, flexible adjustments for creative composition, accessibility for one-handed operation, and wireless operation from a distance. The wireless system is built to maintain reliable performance within a 10-metre range, although Sony notes that actual performance may vary depending on environmental factors.

Both devices are built to maintain dust and drip resistance, although they are not completely impervious to dust or water ingress. Sony advises users to consider the combined weight of the camera and lens, as well as the shooting environment, to ensure stability when using the tripod functionality.
