Dexcom launches Dexcom G7 glucose monitor in Australia
Dexcom has announced the release of its latest continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system, the Dexcom G7, in Australia. Designed for both adults and children from the age of two, the G7 aims to assist in the real-time management of diabetes by automatically sending glucose readings to a compatible smart device or an optional receiver.
The Dexcom G7, which is being introduced to the Australian market, is a compact, all-in-one wearable device. This CGM technology claims to have the fastest sensor warm-up time in the industry, becoming operational within 30 minutes. It also eliminates the need for fingerpricks, which can be a significant relief for those managing diabetes on a daily basis. "Since Dexcom G6 came to market, we've eliminated over 15 billion fingerpricks and helped improve the lives of more than 1.25 million people around the world. We're thrilled to welcome Dexcom G7 to Australia with new features that will help Australians living with diabetes," stated Dr Samy Saad, Senior Director at Dexcom Australia.
The system's notable features include precision in glucose monitoring, reduced sensor size (60% smaller than its predecessor), and a significantly faster warm-up. The G7 also has a 10-day sensor wear period with a 12-hour grace period for a seamless transition between sessions. Furthermore, the device is waterproof up to 2.4 metres, providing flexibility for activities such as swimming and showering.
In addition to these features, the Dexcom G7 allows users to input notes for various events like meals, insulin intake, and physical activities. The device includes customisable alerts to warn of high and low glucose levels, which can be crucial for timely management. Dr Samy Saad emphasised the system's performance, adding that it is clinically proven to lower HbA1c and reduce instances of hyper- and hypoglycaemia. Customisable alerts are aimed to support users in maintaining their glucose levels within the optimal range.
In terms of user engagement and connectivity, the Dexcom G7 integrates with Dexcom Clarity, a redesigned mobile app that assists in glucose data monitoring and sharing. This remote monitoring capability allows users to share their glucose data with up to 10 followers, such as family members or healthcare providers, providing an added layer of support and peace of mind. Melbourne model and entrepreneur Bambi Northwood-Blyth, who has type 1 diabetes, expressed her enthusiasm about the product launch. "The Dexcom G7 is now easier than ever to use and seamlessly integrates into your daily routine with customisable and predictive alerts," Northwood-Blyth said.
Dexcom's new system also boosts connectivity across other diabetes management tools, such as the t:slim X2 insulin pump, and health apps like Garmin, Happy Bob, Glooko, and Center Health. This reflects the company's effort to make diabetes management more integrated and user-friendly. According to Dexcom, the system is also designed with enhanced discretion, offering new quiet or vibrate alert modes. Additionally, the optional receiver has been redesigned to offer better readability and a more vibrant display.
The launch of the Dexcom G7 in Australia comes amidst a growing need for effective diabetes management tools. Diabetes Australia reports that more than 1.5 million Australians are currently living with diabetes, with another 500,000 cases undiagnosed. The availability of new technology like the Dexcom G7 aims to address this healthcare challenge by offering more precise and user-friendly options for glucose monitoring.
