Vera Blue relies on Sennheiser setup for powerful live shows

Wed, 15th Oct 2025

Vera Blue has chosen the Sennheiser Digital 6000 system and MM 445 microphone capsule as the backbone of her live performances.

The singer-songwriter, known for her emotive and powerful vocal delivery, has relied on Sennheiser's equipment to support her stage presence, with clarity and consistency forming a core part of her live setup.

Personal choice

The decision to use the MM 445 capsule is one that Vera Blue, whose real name is Celia Pavey, describes in personal terms. She explained, "The 445 just gets my voice. It's clear, warm, and it handles all the delicate bits without losing power. Plus, it cuts out stage spill, which helps me stay focused. I can trust it and that trust gives me freedom."

Her technical team echoes this sentiment, pointing to the importance of equipment that consistently captures the nuances of Vera Blue's performances and minimises distractions from stage noise.

According to Front of House Engineer James "Jimmy" Livingston, "We've been using the MM 445 for years, it's always been Celia's mic. We tried other capsules out of necessity, but we always came back to the 445. It's the only one that truly captures her voice."

Focus on storytelling

This consistency in equipment, both in sound and reliability, is critical for Vera Blue's approach to storytelling. She commented, "Songwriting started when I was about 14 as a way to process emotions and tell stories. Somewhere along the way it turned into my whole world. I love it so much."

For Vera Blue and her team, reliable audio equipment is not just a technical consideration, but a key factor that allows her to concentrate fully on her artistry. Her comments underline the significance of dependable gear on stage: "The D6000's made everything better," she shares. "Cleaner sound, no dropouts and the confidence to move anywhere on stage. If I know the sound is locked, I can stop thinking and just be in the moment."

"The 445 just gets my voice," she explains. "It's clear, warm, and it handles all the delicate bits without losing power. Plus, it cuts out stage spill, which helps me stay focused. I can trust it and that trust gives me freedom."

Livingston reinforced the importance of reliability for live performance, saying, "You can't overstate how important reliability is. Celia's one of the most consistent vocalists I've ever worked with. The gear needs to be just as consistent. The Digital 6000 gives us the quality of studio sound with the resilience of a live system."

Technical perspectives

The technical attributes of the Digital 6000 system and MM 445 capsule are designed to support complex and demanding live environments. The MM 445 features a supercardioid pickup pattern and a spring-mounted capsule, which isolate Vera Blue's vocals from ambient noise, contributing to an intimate sound. Its aluminium-copper voice coil delivers dynamic response and feedback resistance, even in high-volume situations.

The Digital 6000 system incorporates equidistant frequency spacing, providing intermodulation-free operation and enabling more wireless channels in tighter radio frequency environments. Its Link Density mode allows doubling of available channels without sacrificing audio quality, a benefit highlighted during larger festival or quick turnaround shows.

Monitor Engineer Michael Wickens noted the performance of the setup in small venues with challenging acoustics. "It was really good," he said, referring to a recent show at Mary's Underground. "It's a tricky room, but the system worked really well. I've had lots of people commenting on how good it sounded. We were able to push it over the mix without feedback, which was great."

Supporting the whole band

Sennheiser's influence is also felt by the musicians supporting Vera Blue. The switch from earlier G3 in-ear monitor systems to the newer G4 units provided a noticeable advancement, according to Wickens. "The band noticed it immediately," he said. "It's tighter, clearer and more musical."

Wickens also emphasised Vera Blue's detailed ear for her own vocals while voicing confidence in the team to deliver results.

"Celia knows how her voice is supposed to sound. She's incredibly tuned in to detail, but also trusts us to deliver," he said.

Looking forward

Vera Blue and her technical team continue to explore new ways of enhancing the live experience, including through potential adoption of Sennheiser's Spectera system. Plans for upcoming performances and her forthcoming album "Rituals" will guide further equipment developments.

For Vera Blue, the ongoing relationship with her microphone and sound setup remains critical to her performance process. "Performing can be quite spiritual and magical," she said. "So when everything is in its right place it can feel otherworldly, perfect."
